Is a will enough during COVID-19? I think many people are wondering if the fact that they did a will is good enough right now because there’s so much worry going around. I’m estate planning and probate attorney Sarah Siedentopf and I practice here in Atlanta, Georgia. We would love for you to give us a call about this question: “Is my will enough?” But realistically, a will takes care of your assets and your children after you have passed away. So I would say, no, a will is not enough, particularly when we are talking about medical issues around a pandemic.
You want to make sure that during your lifetime you’ve got an advance directive for health care in place. If somebody needs to make medical decisions and you aren’t able to make them, you want the doctor to know what decision you want, and you want the doctor to know whose opinion to trust. So, making sure that you have that in writing is very important in a situation like this.
The financial power of attorney makes sure that if you’re stuck somewhere maybe a hospital bed unable to get out and sign paperwork and do things, you’ve got somebody who’s legally able to take care of those things for you.
So, I would say right now, no, a will is not enough. It’s a great start. It takes care of your family and your children after you’ve passed away. But it doesn’t take care of you right now, and you really should be looking into taking care of yourself during your lifetime.
